Using VR Trackers – A Game Based on 3D Movement

In May-June of 2018, I developed a game which involved the usage of VR tracking technology to map the player’s movement in 3D space onto the 2D screen. The game encouraged the player to explore the space by presenting them with pickups which guided their movement. Aimed to be a relaxing game, players could collect the pickups at their own pace. The initial idea revolved around placing a tracker on a real world object, such as a toy plane. Then,…

Experimenting with Arduino and Custom Controllers

Initial Experimentation with Makey Makey It was interesting to see all the custom controller games showcased at EGX Rezzed's 'Rock Paper Shotgun' section, from self made consoles to a game entirely controlled by a yoga ball. Makey Makey, a board which can act as a make shift keyboard, was my first introduction to actually making a custom controller.  It could be connected to different components, such as buttons, and you could even make games with pencil, such as a graphite keyboard (below…

I Am a Cube! – Procedurally Generated Multiplayer Game

Initial Idea This game was made in collaboration with Alexander Xu. Since we both come from a Computer Science background, we wanted to focus on some more technical topics such as procedural generation and networking. Admittedly, the very first idea we decided upon was far too large in scope. We wanted to create a multiplayer game where the players took on the role of various quirky animals, and had to use their abilities collaboratively to escape a fortress they were being…

First Unity Project – Space Odyssey Game

Initial Ideas and Concepts During December of 2017, I worked on a Unity game related to Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey 2001. To me, the film was a very artistic (visual and auditory) experience, and the atmosphere it created was far more important that the plot it was trying to tell. The scene where the astronauts encounter the Monolith on the moon particularly captured my attention. The dark lighting and the music (Ligeti’s Requiem) created an unnerving sense of mystery and intrigue. I…

Escape Room Project – Dr. Finkel’s Mind

Researching and Brainstorming In preparation for our escape the room project, I played an escape room called ‘Lady Chastity’s Reserve’, made by Handmade Mysteries. It was different to other escape rooms I have played in the past since it had a slight interactive theatre element to it (there was an actor who was very involved in the room). I liked that the theme of the room wasn’t to escape (like usual escape rooms), but instead you had to find a…

Connect! Board Game Design

My first project whilst studying Game Design MA at LCC was to design and create a board game. Initial Idea My initial approach was to consider games which I myself enjoyed playing. This led me to a focus on collaborative games. The experience of working together with others and collectively feeling a sense of triumph or failure appealed to me. My mind rushed with ideas of collaborative games, and a simple four player connection game was born. Information Feedback Information In this…
